Epiphone guitars are fantastic because they are an arm of Gibson and so all of their guitrars are affordable variations of some of Gibson’s most popular models. What’s great about this is that in buying an Epiphone you are buying an instrument from a manufacturer that is closesly related to easily one of the most celebrated guitar manufacturers in the world and you are benefiting from all the quality and guitar making expertise that comes with such history, pefigree, knowledge and esteem.
Epiphone guitars are simply ideal for beginners who are looking for great looking instruments that are suitable for their modest budgets. In short, you can’t really go wrong with an Epiphone.
Epiphone Special-II GT Electric Guitar, Worn Black
The first Epiphone we’e going to look at is the formiddable Epiphone Special-II GT. Judging by looks alone this guitar should have a higher price tag than it does.
In terms of its design it is obviously based on the classic Les Paul design that is so recognisable by guitarists and non-guitarists alike.
What makes this guitar truly special is that it has certain features that you just wouldn’t find on another Epiphone Les Paul in this price range and is therefore a real bargain of a guitar.
Take for example the gothic looking worn black finish and all black hardware and the black pickguard, all of which adds to the vintage look with an industrial edge. This level of attention to detail would not be found on many comparable guitars in this price range.
The high output, USA designed, ceramic pickups will give you the option of a huge array of tones from warm clean tones to dirty rock, growling tones. Because of the high output you will even be able to perfect your pinched harmonics – that awesome high-pitch squealing sound that many guitarists such as Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society) and Dimebag Darrell (Pantera) became famous for.
Epiphone has also incorporated some amazing electronics into the Epiphone Special-II GT
in the form of its combined master tone and kill switch in addition to its pickup selector and volume control. Basically, the tone control acts as any other until you press or ‘tap’ it witch temporarily cuts the signal resulting in silence. This is a great effect ofen used by guys like Tom Morrello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave) and Buckethead (Guns N Roses, solo).
What makes this guitar even more remarkabel for a guitar of this price is the inclusion of a tremolo or whammy bar. Because of its quality construction in conjunction with the LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge and special V-Trem tailpiece you will be able to bend notes and chords right out of tune and have them spring back up to perfect pitch with no problems at all.
This is not so much a guitar but more of a rock machine!
Epiphone Limited Edition Wilshire Electric Guitar in Alpine White
This is an absolute beauty of a guitar and we are the proud owners of no less than three of them. There is ano way that this guitar should be as affordable as it is! This special edition Epiphone Wilshire is based on one of the most sought after collectors guitars of all the time, the 1962 Epiphone Wilshire, genuine specimens of which can today exchange hands for many thousands of dollars.

They just look so cool and unlike any other guitar that is available in this price range, which is exactly what you need if you want to stand out from teh crowd and that’s exactly what musicianship is all about.
We adore the vintage, yet somehow contemporray styling of the body and its contours, coupled with the beautiful Alpine White finish which contrasts perfectly with the mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard on which you can see those great looking block inlays.
The Alnico Classic Plus humbuckers sound lovely and sharp when the guitar is played clean and provide some lovely deep blues tones when used with a touch of overdrive.
The positioning of the volume/tone controls and the pickup switch on the wonderful curved pickguard make for quick and easy access and the reduced length lower horn is great because not only can you reach the highest frets with ease, it also makes the Epiphone Wilshire lighter in weight.
And just look at the gorgeous headstock with its bat-wing styling and Alpine White highlight to match the body of the guitar. Such design and craftsmanship are rarely seen in a guitar of this price.
Epiphone have only made a limited number of these guitars which is exactly why we bought three of them!
Epiphone SG Special Electric Guitar in Cherry
Finally we’re going to take a look at the the Epiphone SG Special, another great cheap Epiphone guitar.
This particular guitar is Epiphone’s version of another classic guitar, the ubiquitous Gibson SG which has been used by such rock icons as Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and of course Angus Young of AC/DC to name but a few. It’s fantastic price means that everyone can afford a genuine SG shaped guitar and not one of the other copies from lesser known manufcturers that exist. Apart from the name on the headstock, the difference between those cheap copies and the Epiphone SG Special is that these feature a headtsock with a tilt of 14 degreed which exerts a small amount of pressure on the nut and therefore helps the guitar to sustain in the way that Epiphones and Gibsons are famous for. Accept no imitations!
You can really get some great sounds of the twin humbuckers which are wax bathed to stop any impurities and air from getting into them and compromising their output, meaning that your tones will be as pure and unalduterated as they can possibly be.
The guitar has great controls in the volume and tone knobs and the toggle switch which allows you to select between the two pickups.
We love the Cherry finish as this is a classic Gibson colour that is slightky transparent and thus allows you to see some of the grain beneath the guitar, reminding you that you are playing an instrument that has been carefully shaped and masterfully built from wood.
The Epiphone SG Special is such a cool guitar and fantastic value at that.
